The jaw joint is a joint that is located just in front of the ears, between the lower jawbone and the temporal bone, and includes the articular cartilage between the two bones, and has the ability to move in many different directions on both sides. Due to its special structure, the jaw joint is the only joint in our body that can slide, move forward and backward, and rotate in a limited way. With its special structure and position, the jaw joint interacts with surrounding tissues such as chewing muscles and teeth. Some disorders in these structures can cause joint problems.

What are the causes of jaw joint disorders?

Discomfort in the jaw joint can be caused by various reasons. However, most of the time these cannot be determined with certainty. For example, people may experience problems such as excessive opening of the mouth during yawning, keeping the mouth open for a long time during dental treatment, excessive load on the jaw joint, and constant clenching of the teeth as a result of stress or anger. Different factors encountered in daily life, such as these, may cause joint problems and the complaints arising from them may not be very obvious. In some cases, the joint problem that started due to a blow to the jaw can also cause a locking effect in the mouth with an abnormal jaw movement. These occur quite distinctly. Other causes of problems related to the jaw joint may include jaw-related factors such as improper dental prostheses, joint tumors, and involuntary contraction of the chewing muscles. Sometimes, psychological factors such as long-term stress, depression or sadness, or diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis that can affect the body and other joints can cause problems in the jaw. Among these reasons, it is known that the most common problem in society is joint problems.

Is treatment necessary in case of noise from the jaw joint?

The sound heard only when opening and closing the mouth, which is not accompanied by symptoms such as dysfunction in the jaw joint, pain or locking of the jaw when open or closed, is not considered a serious problem. These problems do not need to be treated. The aim of the treatment applied in joint problems is not the elimination of the voice. Although surgical treatment has been done, it is possible for the voice to reappear. Therefore, in addition to the voice in the chin, if the above findings are accompanied, treatment should be considered.

Do jaw joint disorders affect mouth opening?

Disturbances in the jaw joint may be of the type that may affect mouth opening. In this case, a decrease in mouth opening can be observed. Mouth opening is a restriction that develops suddenly and continues with severe pain. It is mostly affected because the articular cartilage slides forward and does not replace the cartilage. If the jaw joint is dislocated, the mouth remains clearly open. In this case, the jaw joint should be placed in place with the intervention of the doctor. In addition, in some diseases of the masticatory muscles or due to the slippage between the jawbone and temple bone, called ankylosis, there may be restriction in mouth opening.

Do disorders in the jaw joint cause pain in the ear area?

The jaw joint is in close anatomical neighborhood with the ear. Therefore, pain in jaw joint disorders can be confused with ear pain.

How are the symptoms of jaw joint disorders diagnosed?

The jaw joint is one of the important joints in the body. The main task of the lower jaw is to assist in speaking and chewing. During the maximum opening of the jaw, the jaw joint makes two different movements. These are simple hinge movements and rotation movements with forward sliding. Mouth Closures that cause deviations from the normal position of the structure cause spasms in the masticatory muscles. This is one of the most important reasons for the functions of the jaw joint. The classic image of pain occurring in dysfunction in the jaw joint is

  • having pain
  • Sound from the jaw joint
  • Restricted jaw movement

The way the pain starts in the jawbone can usually give some information about the cause. The pain that starts in the early hours of the morning is caused by the clenching of the teeth during the night without being aware of it. These cause pain in the jaw muscles. Pain that starts late in the day is caused by the movements of the jaw. This type of pain usually occurs due to a problem in the jaw joint. Pain in the jaw joint intensifies with movement and is felt constantly. Pain in the jaw muscles increases with stress and comes intermittently.

The shape of the sound coming from the jaw joint also gives information about the discomfort. If a single click sound is heard in the chin, it is an insignificant sound that is mostly seen in % 40 percent of the society and this sound goes away by itself. If you hear a clicking sound both when the mouth is opened and closed, it is because the displaced articular disc is compressed during the opening and closing of the mouth. If there is a crackling sound from the jaw joint, it can be shown that there is degeneration in the joint due to crushing on the joint surface and loss of softness due to this.

In limited jaw movement, irreversible anterior protrusion of the articular disc, joint adhesion and joint calcification, and cheekbone fractures may also occur.

Disorders in the jawbone show a complex situation in terms of both determining the causes and planning the treatment to be applied. Comparative joint radiographs, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging can be used to diagnose this. In the treatment of these disorders, various treatments such as medication, physical therapy methods, closed joint washing and open joint surgery can be applied.

How are jaw disorders treated?

As in the treatment of other joint problems, treatment is started by using simple methods for problems in the jaw joint. If these treatments are insufficient or ineffective, the next treatment stage is started. It is first treated with drug therapy, night plate or splint treatments, and physical therapy applications. If necessary, minor surgical treatments such as joint washing, intra-articular injections and arthroscopy can be applied in the second stage. If there is no response to these treatments, open joint surgery may rarely be considered. In addition, in some joint problems, immediate surgical intervention may become necessary. These disorders include jaw joint tumors and problems such as fusion of the jaw with the head, called jaw ankylosis. The treatment methods to be chosen according to the type and severity of the problem in the joint are determined by the doctor.
